Lena, the youngest of 9 children, lived with her mother with no outside support until her mother’s health was failing. As Lena’s mother’s health got worse, Lena’s weight increased. Lena was also accustomed to her mother taking care of her every need. Since Lena began receiving se
rvices from Bost at age 36, she has been working on becoming more independent. Lena’s caregiver, Angela Chaffin, is also her niece. Lena and Angela walk around stores for exercise, losing 30 pounds in the process. They are working on phone and money skills, as well as basic meal preparation and clean up. Lena is also striving to handle more of her personal care, including choosing her outfits on her own.
Lena works at Polk County Development Center in Mena where she sorts recycling and works in the store. Lena also takes classes there. Lena is very proud of the work she does there and the friends she has made. Lena also enjoys participating in Special Olympics and has won several medals.
