Northwest Arkansas SuperNaturals

Posted on: Oct 29, 2013

Mark Stave, Coach of the Super Naturals Special Olympics team, headed down to Searcy in May for the Special Olympics State Games.  He took 16 athletes along with him.  15 played on the athletes-only softball team and one, Stacey Parsons, played Bocce ball.

This was the first attempt at an athletes-only softball team.  Mark worked hard to improve the drive in the athletes and he felt that the athletes-only team was the next step.  The team consisted of many Bost clients and some athletes without an agency.

The games were at Harding University and all the athletes were excited to be on a college campus.  They were able to eat at the on campus cafeteria and stay in dorm rooms.  Once rooms were assigned, Coach Mark and David Smiley, assistant coach, had a coaches meeting to get the instructions for our games and the itinerary for the duration of the trip.

First up was the Opening Ceremony.  The team walked to the football stadium where they met up with other athletes from the area and athletes from around the state.  It was a reunion of sorts since the team has been going to the state competitions 3 years and our athletes have formed friendships with athletes from all over.  The Opening Ceremony was impressed from the Grand Entry, where each Area was represented by a different color to the speakers and other official opening events.  Finally the hundreds of motorcycles made their entrance!  The athletes loved the revving the engines and waving bikers!

The SuperNaturals played at 10 the next morning.  The athletes were nervous and excited but they still went out and played hard and ended up with the bronze!  While the softball team was securing the bronze, Stacy Parsons won Gold in Bocce Ball!

After the games were over we went to a "Healthy Athlete" venue.  Here Special Olympics brought in doctors and nurses to perform screenings as requested.  They checked eyes, ears, teeth, reflexes, and coordination.  Many of our athletes participated.  The weekend also consisted of bowling and a big dance!

On the way home, the coaches tell the athletes how proud they are of how they performed and distribute the medals.  The athletes are also asked what their best memory of the games is.  The coaches have stated they are thankful they have these opportunities to spend this time with these special athletes.  The coaches and athletes are also incredibly thankful to the sponsors, Cecilia, Kathy, and Kelly, that provided enough financial backing to pay not only the athletes expenses, but also for the staff!
