The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. Beginning in 1974, the CDBG program is one of the longest continuously run programs at HUD. The CDBG program provides annual grants on a formula basis to 1209 general units of local government and States.
In Fort Smith, the Community Development Department is a section of Development Services. The Community Development department is responsible for administering the costs and charges related to the planning and implementation of community development projects funded in whole or in part by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Grant Programs. Administration activities include providing general project management, annual planning ensuring compliance with Fair Housing Standards and Environmental Review as well as other statutory requirements. Program activities include responsibility for the rehabilitation of privately owned residential properties for low and moderate households and other programs to help provide affordable housing.
Annually, Bost, Inc. determines a project in the Agency that fits with the mission of the CDBG program and applies for funds. In the past, these funds have provided the opportunity for new roofs, flooring, and painting. Most recently, the CDBG program funded a complete interior paint job in the pre-school and adult side of the Marilyn Foster Complex, along with all new flooring in pre-school and all new carpet in the Adult side.
In regard to the CDBG program improvement project Bost would like to recognize Brian Finney, Willy Garrett, Nathan Pettygrew, and Randy Hayden for going above and beyond expectations to help in the timely completion of these projects. Without the thoughtfulness and attention to detail they displayed, our facilities would not be as nice or well maintained. They should be commended for their contributions that they make daily to keep our properties beautiful."
