On Thursday, November 3, fifty patrons gathered at an exclusive event, The Chef and Winemaker Dinner, presented by Alpha Packaging, Inc. The dinner was initially created to be a complement to the annual Grape Escapes event benefitting Bost, Inc., but it has taken on a life of its own.
The sold out evening held at the home of Mr. Tim Smith, began with a media reception, followed by a VIP reception, then the sparkling wine reception and dinner. Vintner Robert Craig of Robert Craig Winery was on hand to introduce his perfectly paired wine prior to each of the four courses prepared by Chef Lee Richardson of Ashley's at the Capital Hotel. Chef Richardson started the reception with passed trays of Oysters Bienville, Pimento Cheese on Grilled Bread and Pickled Egg Salad with Pecan Smoked Bacon. After the guests were seated the Chef presented butternut squash soup with gulf shrimp and tarragon whipped cream, paired with a 2009 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay. The second course consisted of Sorghum Roast Duckling with black apples, turnips and Arkansas rice grits, wonderfully paired with a 2008 Affinity Cabernet Sauvignon. Falling Sky Farms Pork with creamed black-eyed peas and fresh dates was served as the third course, complimented by a delicious 2007 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The dessert course was a Pear Crème Brulee with Candied Citrus, paired with a 2007 Howell Mountain Zinfandel. The Chef employed very creative techniques of preparation for each course and explained them to the diners before the food was served. Mr. Craig spoke of the making of each wine and why it paired so well with the food prepared. It was a delicious and informative evening.
Live auction items were presented between the third and fourth courses and the bidding was lively! Some of the items auctioned were a beautiful Hearts on Fire diamond pendant and frame by Jay Strongwater, both donated by John Mays Jewelers, a trip for 2 to The Capital Hotel in Little Rock, and several bottles of signed wine.
Tickets were $250 each and sold out within 24 hours of going on sale! All proceeds from this event, as well as Grape Escapes, to be held on March 9, 2012, benefit Bost, Inc.
