Our Positive Behavior Support Services made some big changes! As the program has grown, more space was needed to hold group sessions for the individuals served by Bost and our community. Melissa Putman, Positive Behavior Support Specialist, repurposed a room in the Marilyn Foster Complex for this, and future, use.
In addition to a regular schedule of 10-15 one-on-one meetings, twice monthly group home activities, and as-needed meetings and phone calls, each Wednesday Melissa meets with 24 individuals in three different groups for class. Each group has a different style that requires preparation, creativity, and flexibility. The unique way these classes have been structured has allowed for personal growth of the participants, which is extremely evident in the client-led sessions. In client-led sessions, a topic is requested, and presented, by a member of the class! While it is difficult to quantify the outcomes of the program, the increased confidence, leadership and group speaking skills is easy to see in those participating.
A new partnership with The Future School of Fort Smith’s intern program has been integral to our growth! We are also looking for a full-time specialist to work with Melissa. While Melissa leads group sessions, the potential of the newly repurposed space would allow other staff to lead exercise and life skills classes, such as cooking. Additional curriculum can be added easily through the use of technology in the classroom.
